At Russell McVeagh we have a dedicated training and development specialist and we believe we offer the most comprehensive training and development programme in Australasia. The emphasis on training and development continues throughout your career and we tailor courses to suit individual needs. We think that your training should be tailored to suit your individual needs – we don't believe in the ‘cookie cutter’ approach. We run a wide portfolio of development programmes covering a variety of both technical and ‘soft skill’ topics plus our staff are encouraged to attend external seminars to further assist their development.
We recognise that an important part of training is ensuring that you receive regular feedback. This is encouraged both through informal ‘on the job’ feedback, and through formal bi-annual performance appraisals.
Regular technical training
All practice groups offer specific and targeted team based training in their specialist areas, in a variety of formats and on a regular schedule. Practice groups also offer training to other teams whose areas of expertise intersect with theirs.
Mentoring and the opportunity for external experience
We help to develop our solicitors’ careers through external experience such as secondments, to help them advance their skills and grow their relationship with our clients. We also maintain strong networks with clients and overseas firms for solicitors who may wish to travel and work offshore.
For our summer clerks, graduates and younger solicitors, we offer a ‘buddy’ system, where each new solicitor is paired with a buddy who can be their first point of reference and show them the ropes at the firm. We also offer a mentoring scheme which is open to all staff.
At a more senior level, our senior associate programme offers mentoring and a variety of support mechanisms with a goal to maximise the likelihood of successful transition to partner.
