Profile

Bevan has a broad financing practice with a particular focus on project finance and the infrastructure and energy sectors. He brings a wealth of experience from working on innovative and complex financing and infrastructure transactions in New Zealand and international markets. He has extensive experience advising international and domestic financial institutions, corporate borrowers and sponsors on a wide range of transactions including project finance (including public private partnerships), corporate lending, acquisition/leveraged finance, development finance and restructuring.   

Bevan regularly advises on the financing of New Zealand's largest and most complex infrastructure projects, including energy, roading, housing, schools, prisons and telecommunications infrastructure.

Experience

Bevan's experience includes advising:

  • The financiers on various New Zealand PPP transactions, including Transmission Gully, Puhoi to Warkworth, Waikeria Prison, Wiri prison and the Schools II and Schools III bundles.

  • The sponsor on a solar project in New Zealand.

  • The financiers and sponsors on a number of project finance transactions in the United Kingdom, Ireland and developing markets, including the Aberdeen West Peripheral Motorway PPP, an Irish healthcare PPP, waste to energy projects in the United Kingdom, and oil, gas and mining projects in the North Sea and Africa.

  • Spark New Zealand as majority shareholder on the Southern Cross Next Cable.

  • The senior lender on the New Zealand law aspects of the financing for the Hawaiki submarine cable project.

  • Goodman Property Trust on its financing arrangements.

  • The lenders to various New Zealand corporates including EBOS and Z Energy

  • The Provincial Development Unit on a number of transactions as part of the rollout of the Provincial Growth Fund

  • Tasman District Council on debt financing provided by Crown Irrigation Investments Limited for the Waimea Dam irrigation project

  • The senior lenders on the development of the Pacifica apartment building.

  • The lenders on the financing and refinancing of university student accommodation developments.

Professional

Bevan began his career at Russell McVeagh and returned to the firm in 2017 after spending over eight years in London. During his time overseas, Bevan practised in the financing team at Slaughter and May and in the international project finance team at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP. 

Bevan is listed as a top lawyer for Banking and Finance Law and Project Finance and Development Practice in the Best Lawyers® New Zealand guide, which also gave him the Lawyer of the Year award for Project Finance and Development Practice (2023) and Banking and Finance Law (2024).
