Russell McVeagh's Government, Competition and Regulation partner Bradley Aburn has been named Young Private Practice Lawyer of the Year at the 2023 New Zealand Law Awards, in recognition of the quantity, quality, importance and innovativeness of his work.

Judges' comments include:

"A demonstrated commitment to the law and the institutions that surround it. Surely a long and illustrious career lies ahead;"

"Great to see a lawyer contributing in so many ways to the legal profession and the public. Relevant achievements well articulated;"

"Strong external recognition."

As the firm's youngest partner, Bradley is a standout lawyer with extensive experience in advising a number of high-profile clients on significant matters relating to mergers/acquisitions, competition law investigations, market studies, competitor collaborations and partnering, syndication, internal competition and consumer law compliance programmes, and other regulatory issues (including electricity regulation).

Having previously worked in London and Brussels advising on the full gambit of European competition law issues, Bradley draws on his international experience to provide a unique perspective on New Zealand issues where there may be a lack of domestic precedent.

Bradley is recognised as a Next Generation Partner in Competition Law by the Legal 500 2022 Guide, in the peer-nominated Best Lawyers® 2024 Guide, and a Rising Star in 2023 in the NZ Lawyers list. He has also played a significant role in the Competition/Antitrust practice's top legal rankings including in the Chambers & Partners 2023 Asia-Pacific guide and Global Competition Review’s GCR 100.

The firm also won NZ Large Law Firm of the Year and Large Law Firm Leader for Board Chair and partner Allison Arthur-Young at the NZ Law Awards, plus two Deal of the Year awards including Equity Market Deal of the Year and Mid-Market Deal of the Year, for Corporate partners Joe Windmeyer and David Raukivi.
