The Digital Identity Services Trust Framework Bill ("Bill") has passed its third and final reading today. Once the Bill receives Royal Assent, it will become law.
In a statement published today, Digital Economy and Communications Minister Ginny Andersen stated that "
[the framework] will help New Zealand stand out as a leader in the ethical, trusted deployment of technology on the world stage".
The core objective of the Bill is to help develop digital identity services that are trusted and people-centric. While the primary obligations in the Bill will be on digital identity service providers on an opt-in basis, it will also have an impact on individuals and organisations in the digital identity ecosystem, including banks, government agencies, utility and telecommunications providers.
